Animal kingdom

Animal kingdom

Africa is blessed with many beautiful animals, from the small desert rats to the large elephants. In this section you will find information and photos about a lot of birds and mammals that live in Africa.

The information about the mammals in this section is published by courtesy of safari park Beekse Bergen, Hilvarenbeek, the Netherlands.

Birds

A birds eye on birds
Birds are the most advanced flying animals on earth and they are the only vertebrates with feathers. There are about 29 orders of birds, about 180 families, and about 9000 species. In this section we describe a lot of different orders and show you pictures of the birds we found in Africa.

Mammals

African elephant
The African elephant is the largest still living land mamal and can be found South of the Sahara. The African elephant is bigger and heavier than the Asian elephant and it can reach an age of 60 to 70 years.

Baboon
The baboon is found in West- and Northeast africa. There is a difference between the olive baboon and the yellow baboon. The olive baboon is a heavily built monkey with an olive brown coat. The yellow baboon is lighter in build and has a yellowish brown coat.

Cheetah
The cheetah is the only catlike animal which can be recognised by its trail with nail inprints. This is because the nail cannot be retracted. It is the fastest land mammal and on short distances the cheetah can reach a speed up to about 110 km/h.

Common eland
Elands have the best adaptability of the antelopes. They can be found in a wide variaty of terrains, but not in deserts and forests. Although elands do not run away for preditors quickly, they do run away for humans very quickly.

Common wildebeest
The common wildebeest is sometimes called the african clown. This is because it is a strangely fashioned, beared antilope with a heavy-looking head, long face, humped back and a long wispy tail.

Common zebra
The common zebra has a squabby body with short legs and a small head. It has broad black and white stripes which are moving on under the belly and each zebra has a unique coat pattern.

Giraffe
Most people divide the giraffe into nine subspecies based on the number of ossicorns, the differences in the coat and association with a particular geographic region. But disagreements still persist on how many subspecies their actual should be recognized.

Lion
Lions are the only truly social members of the cat family, living together with mature males and females in troups. The lion is a heavy build animal with a wide, massive head. Unmistakable are the manes which cover only the head of the male lion.

White rhinoceros
There are five different species of rhinoceros and the white rhino is the largest. He is larger but lighter than a hippo and after the elephant it is the largest land animal.
