Guinea-Bissau is located on the coast of West Africa and has a total land area of 36 120 square kilometers. It is surrounded by Senegal to the north, Guinea to the south and east and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. The country consists of the mainland, a group of over 18 islands called the the Bissagos archipelago and some other coastal islands.
Guinea-Bissau has a tropical, generally hot and humid climate with two seasons. A monsoonal-type wet season from June to November with southwesterly winds and August to be the wettest month. A dry season from December to May with northeasterly harmattan winds and April and May to be the hottest months. The average temperature varies from from 24 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius all year.
The majority of the population of Guinea-Bissau is of Black African origin. The main etnic groups living in the country are the Balante, the Fulani, the Malinke, the Mandyako and the Pepel. Most of the population follow local native tribal beliefs, while about 30% are Muslims and a small group are Christians.
When you want to visit Guinea-Bissau, always check the latest security situation before you go. Unfortunately it is a country with a lot of unrest, particularly the northwest region.
