Introduction to the Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo is located in West Central Africa. It is bound by Gabon to the west, Cameroon to the northwest, the Central African Republic to the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south and east as well as Angola and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. The vast percentage of population live in the south, between the capital city of Brazzaville and the coastal city of Point Noire.
Much of the the Republic of Congo is covered by dense grasslands, mangroves and forests. The country can be divided into four topographical zones. The Bateke Plateau (or central highlands) which is covered by dense forests. A coastal plain which is a treeless plain with swamps, lakes and rivers. The fertile Niari Valley in the south central area and the Zaire River Basin in the north which is composed of flood plains in the lower areas and a dry savannah in the upper areas.
The country has a tropical climate with little seasonal variation. The temperatures are mostly high with a humidity around 80%.
Travelers are still warned that visiting the Republic of Congo can be quite dangerous. Most of the country continues to be insecure and changeable, so before you go and visit this country, make sure you get the latest travel advice.
