Introduction to Burundi
created on:
2001-07-28
Burundi is a landlocked country and surrounded by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It comprises about 27,830 square kilometers and is one of Africa's most densely populated nations. The capital city Bujumbura has industries like paper, textiles, leather, chemicals and agricultural products. Regrettably it is not the friendliest place in the world.
The small mountainous country has a long history of tribal wars, leaving the fertile land mostly underdeveloped. The majority of the population are Hutus, while Tutsis, originally from Ethiopia and Uganda, and the original inhabitants Twa Pygmies form minorities. Since independance in 1962 intertribal tensions have been a problem.
The climate is hot and very humid, especially around lake Tanganyaka, with temperatures varying between 23 degrees and 30 degrees. In the mountains to the east of the lake, the average temperature is about 20 degrees. The wet seasons are from February to May and September to November. The dry seasons from June to August and December to January
