Bobiri Forest Reserve and Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary

Bobiri Forest Reserve and Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary

Bamboo in the Bobiri rainforest

As the name implies, the Bobiri Forest Reserve is an area of rainforest which is still in good shape. This part is now protected against logging and by walking through the forest over the clearly layed out paths, you can enjoy the admosphere here. At the Bobiri guesthouse you will find a small 'reception' where you can pay your entrance fee. This is also where the butterfly sanctuary is located.

At the butterfly sanctuary, by planting the right trees and flowers, they are creating a place to attract the butterflies and research the many species. In front of the guesthouse, a small area consists of trees which are labeled and together with the handout they have, you can start learning to identify the many different trees.
Remember that the butterflies do not like the moister and will therefor show themselves specialy during mid day. Luckely there is enough shadow so it shouldn't be to much of a problem to walk around during this warmer period of the day.

The forest is still home to people who live from certain bush animals. At night you can hear a gunshot from time to time and it is also possible to find some locals 'grilling' there meal in the bush during the day

Where to find the sanctuary:

To get to the The Bobiri Forest Reserve and Butterfly Sanctuary from Kumasi, take the road to Accra. When you reach the town Kubease you will see a big entrance gate on your left with the words Akwaba (meaning welcome). Although there is no other indication that the forest reserve is here, take this road (the tarmac ends). On the dirtroad a sign will indicate that you have to take an even smaller road to the right. After some going up and down you will reach the Bobiri guest-house and entrance.

Entrance fee and lodging:

The entrance fee is 5.000 cedis per person

A luxury room, with private bathroom and toilet, costs 100.000 cedis for a night.
A normal room costs 50.000 cedis for a night and makes use of the common toilet and douche (which actually are quiet good).
Camping costs 15.000 cedis per person for a night.

(All mentioned prices are from april 2002)
